These seperate buildings make up one complete architecture. This idea is inspired from traditional korean housing composition, where one housing is composed of different seperate rooms/buildings. Often I get visual inspirations from nature. Through sensors, Meadow reacts to visitors, with the flowers blooming in response to their presence, as if they were the sun to the flowers. The site is LG Art Center in Seoul, designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the building’s design is characterized by clean lines, the use of raw concrete, and a careful interplay of light and shadow, which creates a serene atmosphere. WHAT I DID - Designing the composition of the installation within the given spacewW - Selecting color composition of each flower elements - Physical modeling, 3D digital visualisation CHALLENGE Main focus of the composition of the artwork was to make an easthetically pleasing structure that harmonizes well with the givcen space. I considered main views, one from the entrance of the space and one from the top of the stairs. The immense ceiling height and hidden obstacles in the sub-ceiling was challenging to overcome. The exhibition takes place at the contemporary art space Storage by Hyundai Card. The works that are magnificently installed are Fragile Future, Amplitude and Shylight. In the series Materialism there are four new works added, which are debuting in Seoul. Materialism is the ongoing research project in which DRIFT deconstructs familiar objects of which they tend to only consider their function. By ‘de-produces’ the produced, DRIFT tries to visualise how much of the matter whiten these objects are extracted from the earth. For these new artworks a Barbie, a Gameboy, a game and a bag of South-Korean Shin-Ramyun noodles were deconstructed. The project studies the value of ‘human originality’. She finds the originality in our inherent ‘imperfection’ as she explores craftsmanship as a prime example of our pursuit of perfection. She shows craftsmanship through an installation meant to manually produce the Bodoni typeface. Typefaces are one of humanity’s earliest and primary examples of mass-production. Lee’s installation and extensive research on the lowercase ‘a’ in the Bodoni typeface could theoretically allow her to create the “perfect” reproduction. However despite her countless efforts, her results always end up slightly imperfect in various ways. In these imperfections lies the heart of our originality and they represent the divide between us and machines. Lee’s installation embraces this human quality and celebrates it, acknowledging our desire for perfection despite always falling slightly short. About the artist: Sooji Lee was born in Korea, grew up in Jakarta, studied in Seoul, worked in New York as a graphic designer and recently completed her masters at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. After a series of interviewing her and listening to her music, I have created an visual artwork that was inspired by her spirit that was desolved into her new album.
